A Taste of Amman
in the Mid-South

From owner Asad Almalhi's family sweet shop in Jordan to Memphis — savor freshly baked Kaak Bread, golden knafeh, and cardamom-spiked Turkish coffee. Our ambition is to share our culture through every pastry we make.

Our Story

A Taste of Amman, Rooted in Memphis

Petra Pastry was born from owner Asad Almalhi's childhood in Amman, Jordan, where he learned the art of crafting knafeh in his father's sweet shop. Today, that same tradition fills our Memphis bakery — freshly made cheese topped with crispy pastry and pistachios, best paired with Turkish coffee spiked with cardamom for the perfect sweet and salty balance.

Walk through our doors and you'll be greeted by the aroma of fresh Kaak Bread — Jerusalem Bread generously coated in sesame seeds, crisp outside and pillowy soft within. Asad's wife, Maisaa Hassan, leads our dessert kitchen, hand-making cheesecakes, cookies, baklava, and pistachio Arabic ice cream rolls. As Asad says, "My ambition is to tell the Mid-South of our culture through our sweets and baked goods."

Voices From Our Community

Sharing Our Culture, One Sweet at a Time

"The knafeh here is absolutely addicting — that sweet and salty combination of fresh cheese, crispy pastry, and pistachios is unlike anything else in Memphis. Paired with their cardamom-spiked Turkish coffee, it's a transportive experience. A true taste of Amman in the Mid-South."

- Edible Memphis

"The moment you walk in, the smell of fresh bread fills the air. Their Kaak — Jerusalem Bread coated in sesame seeds — has a crisp outside and pillowy soft interior. I grab a loaf and head next door to Ali Baba for hummus and shawarma. Maisaa's baklava and pistachio ice cream rolls keep me coming back."

From Amman to Memphis

All in the Family

Owner Asad Almalhi learned the art of pastry growing up in Amman, Jordan, working alongside his father in the family sweet shop. Those early mornings — kneading dough, layering knafeh, toasting sesame seeds for Kaak Bread — became the foundation of what is now Petra Pastry.

Asad's wife, Maisaa Hassan, leads the dessert side of the business, hand-crafting fresh baked cheesecakes, cookies, and baklava daily. Together, they fill the shop with the smell of fresh bread, the warmth of cardamom-spiked Turkish coffee, and pistachio Arabic ice cream rolls that speak to the richness of their heritage.

Just next door, Ali Baba Mediterranean Grill serves hummus, falafel, and shawarma — and regulars often pair the two, a tradition Asad and Maisaa cherish. As Asad puts it: "My ambition is to tell the Mid-South of our culture through our sweets and baked goods."
